An adventure has the power to pull you out of a rut, ignite a spark, or even shift your perspective on life. And, I was craving all three. That’s why when the opportunity came to take part in Large Minority’s Sri Lanka Tuk Tuk Adventure, I didn’t hesitate for a second.
For seven days, it was me, my cousin Amy, our trusty little tuk tuk, and the wild, unpredictable roads of Sri Lanka. We weren’t totally on our own, though; there were three other teams, the incredible organizers from Large Minority, and a pit crew of mechanics who somehow managed to keep all of our tuk tuks running (despite our “learning curve” driving skills). And what a ride it was – equal parts exhilarating, humbling, hilarious, and downright magical.
Sri Lanka Tuk tuk

First, Let’s Talk Tuk Tuks

If you’ve never seen or ridden in one, a tuk-tuk is essentially a motorized rickshaw, with three wheels, a little roof, and just enough horsepower to make you feel like you’re in a real-life video game. Now, imagine learning to drive one manually, dodging buses, weaving through cows, and taking hairpin turns on cliffside roads. That was our daily reality on our Sri Lanka adventure.
Our tuk-tuk became more than just a mode of transportation. It was our companion, our shelter from the rain, our karaoke booth, and sometimes our biggest frustration. But by the end of the week, we were pros enough to chase down the bread tuk-tuk without problem.  And yes, you heard me right; in Sri Lanka, they don’t have ice cream trucks, but rather bread tuk-tuks, complete with music and all!

Now, Let’s Talk Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a small island nation sitting just off the southern tip of India, surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. But don’t let the size fool you – this country is bursting with diversity. One day you’re driving past endless tea plantations in the cool and misty highlands, the next you’re cruising along golden beaches, and by the following morning you might be hiking through lush jungle or exploring ancient ruins. In just a week, during our Sri Lanka Adventure,  we were able to see it all.
And the wildlife? It’s everywhere. At one point, we spotted a wild elephant calmly chilling on the side of the road, so close we could hardly believe it. And then there were the monkeys. So many monkeys. Swinging from trees and sometimes just sitting along the roadside watching the tuk-tuks go by, as if we were the entertainment. It added this extra layer of wonder to every drive, reminding us that in Sri Lanka, nature is always right there alongside you.
But as incredible as the landscapes and wildlife are, it’s the people of Sri Lanka who truly make the country unforgettable. Everywhere we went, we were met with warm smiles, waves, and genuine curiosity about our little tuk-tuk adventure. Strangers stopped to point us in the right direction, helped get our tuk-tuk started after we killed it more than a few times, and families even welcomed us into their homes to share food and stories.
There’s a generosity of spirit here that lingers long after you leave. It wasn’t just about being tourists passing through; it felt like being invited into something deeper, something rooted in community and kindness. And that, more than anything, is what makes Sri Lanka feel so special.

Why Large Minority

A question I’ve been asked quite a bit is why I signed up with Large Minority instead of just renting a tuk-tuk and going rogue. The answer is quite simple: I wanted the planning and logistics to be organized for me; this way, I could show up, immerse myself, and enjoy the ride. As a mom, I usually plan 100% of our family trips, so it was such a treat to have someone else handle the time-consuming logistics for a change. On top of that, it was incredibly reassuring to know that we had a safety net in place. There were mechanics and crew who were never more than a text away in case something went wrong.
Large Minority does a great job mixing adventure with purpose, fun, and community. They design these challenges/adventures to get you off the beaten path, push you outside your comfort zone, and connect you with both locals and fellow adventurers. For me, it wasn’t just seeing Sri Lanka, but truly experiencing it.

Daily Challenges

Another thing I love about Large Minority’s adventures is the daily challenges they present.  These challenges offer a deeper and more enriched experience.   They are optional challenges presented to you each morning. These aren’t just fun tasks; they’re challenges designed to pull you out of the tourist bubble and set you off the beaten path right into the heart of Sri Lanka.
Our challenges ranged from sitting with Buddhist monks and learning their sacred prayers to getting invited into a stranger’s kitchen, where the air was rich with the scent of spices and curry leaves. We were taught by a local family how to make a proper Sri Lankan rice and curry – and of course, how to eat it the local way, with our fingers.
Each challenge nudged us out of our comfort zones in the best way possible. More than just activities, they became intimate connections, and moments of laughter, learning, and humility that left us feeling not just like visitors.

Adventure and Luxury Combined

I need to be honest, I love adventure, but I also love nice things.  This adventure thankfully has both. One of the most surprising parts of the trip was how our adventure was seamlessly mixed with luxury. By day, we were bouncing down backroads in our tuk-tuk, dodging buses, monkeys, and the occasional cow. By night, we were sinking into crisp sheets at 4- and 5-star accommodations that felt like little slices of paradise.
Each evening brought something new – sometimes rustic, sometimes refined, but always unforgettable. Both breakfast and dinner were included, and honestly, the food alone deserves its own blog post. From smoky barbecue in the misty Knuckles mountain range to fresh seafood caught steps away from the beach, every meal was as memorable as the views.

Here’s a peek at some of the incredible places we stayed, all part of the Thema Collection.

Amba Yaalu – Kandalama

Perched above Kandalama Lake, Amba Yaalu is all about serenity. The infinity pool overlooks lush mango trees, and mornings here felt like waking up in a postcard. The rooms are modern but warm, blending luxury with that uniquely Sri Lankan sense of calm. It’s also worth noting that Amba Yaalu is Sri Lanka’s first all-women-run resort. Girl Power!

Wild Glamping Knuckles

This one was pure magic. Imagine luxury tents tucked into the heart of the Knuckles mountain range, with mist rolling over the peaks in the morning and a cool crisp chill in the air. The barbecue dinner was one of the best meals of the trip, a perfect blend of cozy and adventurous. We ended up arriving at this location a bit late. We would have loved to have a bit more time to hike and see more of the area.

Tea Factory and Experience

Easily one of the most unique stays I’ve ever had. This boutique hotel is situated within a converted tea factory. You can still see the original machinery, and of course, sip endless cups of Ceylon tea. It felt like stepping back in time, but with every modern comfort you could ask for.
The “experience” part of the stay included learning about and picking tea leaves, followed by a visit to the factory to see how the tea is made.

Wild Glamping Gal Oya

Another glamping gem, this time tucked away near Gal Oya National Park. Think safari vibes with canvas tents, lantern light, and waking up to the sounds of nature. It was the perfect spot to slow down, disconnect, and appreciate Sri Lanka’s wild side.
What makes Gal Oya especially unique is its connection to the Vedda people, one of Sri Lanka’s last remaining indigenous tribes.  While staying here, we had the chance to meet members of the Vedda community.

Maalu Maalu Beach Resort

If I had to pick a place to stay forever, this might be it. Right on the beach, Maalu Maalu is a laid-back luxury resort with an eco-friendly soul. We swam, we lounged, and we feasted on curry, seafood, and Kottu with our toes in the sand. It was the kind of place where you exhale and suddenly realize just how much you needed the ocean.

Aliya Resort and Spa

Nestled in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Aliya blends modern design with traditional Sri Lankan charm. The infinity pool here deserves its own mention – stretching out toward the horizon with views of Sigiriya Rock in the distance. After a week of tuk-tuk chaos, my massage here felt downright heavenly.

Help is Only a Text Away

I briefly mentioned above about our “safety net” while we were on the road, but I felt that it needed its own section.  Our nerves were running high as we first set out on our Sri Lanka adventure. And to be fair, some of those roads were downright intimidating. Between hairpin turns, surprise potholes, and the occasional wandering cow, it sometimes felt like we’d signed up for a video game on “expert” mode.
But our anxiety was quickly eased knowing that help was never far away. The mechanics, better known (and proudly self-titled) as the “Wrench Lords,” were always just a text or call away. And let me tell you, Amy and I tested that system more than once.
Case in point: we managed to stall and kill our tuk-tuk right at the base of a mountain road, before we’d even really gotten started. Confidence level = zero. Luckily, the Wrench Lords swooped in like the heroes they are, and ended up driving us up the steep switchbacks until we felt ready to give it another go. By the time we took the wheel again, we were laughing instead of panicking, and a little more convinced that maybe we could handle this crazy adventure after all.
By the end of the week, the Wrench Lords felt less like mechanics and more like guardian angels on three wheels.

Changed Forever

This wasn’t just a vacation. It wasn’t even just a trip. This was a life-changing experience.
Driving a tuk-tuk across Sri Lanka taught me so much more than how to handle a manual three-wheeler on chaotic roads.  It reminded me of the power of stepping outside your comfort zone, laughing at your mistakes, leaning on strangers, and embracing the unknown.
Our Sri Lanka Adventure gave us more than postcard views and incredible meals; it gave us a connection to the land, to its people, to each other, and even to ourselves.  It brought my cousin and me closer than ever.  Every challenge, every breakdown, every winding road was part of a bigger lesson: that adventure isn’t about the destination, it’s about who you become along the way.
I left with dusty and broken shoes, a camera full of memories, and a heart cracked wide open in the best possible way. And while the tuk-tuk stayed behind, the spark it lit inside me came home, and that’s something I’ll carry forever.
