Waldorf Salad is an easy and delicious salad that combines only a few ingredients- apples, celery, and walnuts. My mom often made this salad when I was younger, and I still find myself craving its tangy and sweet flavors.
Waldorf Salad was first created in 1893 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The original recipe was just apples, celery, and mayonnaise. It wasn’t until the 1920s that my favorite part, the walnuts, was added. The recipe I remember as a kid has mostly stayed the same. I have had it with grapes, but they made the salad too sweet for my taste. I still enjoy the simple ingredients and textures I originally had as a child- apples, celery, and walnuts.
I love making this salad in the fall when I have an abundance of apples. It’s a welcomed alternative to baking them into pies and other sweets. As I mentioned earlier, this salad is incredibly easy to make. It makes a perfect addition to potlucks and more significant feasts during Thanksgiving and Holiday season.
