Did you know you can paint concrete? I only learned this recently, and let me tell you, it was a total game-changer for our DIY side yard makeover.
Our side yard was covered in old, patchy concrete that had definitely seen better days. Ideally, I would’ve loved to rip it all out and install pretty pavers or fresh landscaping, but that just wasn’t in the budget. So, we did the next best thing – we painted it!

Why We Painted Our Concrete Patio

Painting concrete is an affordable and surprisingly transformative way to refresh outdoor spaces, such as patios, walkways, and side yards. But here’s a word of advice: color matters!
We started with a light grey shade, thinking it would brighten up the space. It did, but it also created a harsh glare and showed every speck of dirt. Lesson learned! We repainted with a deeper, richer shade, and it made all the difference. We finally chose “Unpredictable Hue” from Behr. Not only does it look more polished, but it also hides dirt and scuffs significantly better.

How to Paint Concrete the Right Way

If you’re considering a concrete painting project of your own, here are the steps we followed to make sure the finish was smooth, durable, and long-lasting:
  1. Start with a deep clean
We borrowed a pressure washer and thoroughly cleaned the entire surface. This is a crucial first step – don’t skip it! Once clean, let the concrete dry completely overnight.
  2. Fill in the cracks
Use a concrete crack filler to patch up any gaps. This step helps prevent moisture from getting in and keeps the paint from peeling later on.
  3. Prime the surface
Just like with any paint job, primer makes all the difference. Ensure the primer is completely dry before applying the final coat of paint.
  4. Use the right paint
You can’t use just any paint for concrete. We used Behr Elastomeric Masonry, Stucco, and Brick Exterior Paint, which is designed to adhere to rough surfaces and withstand the elements.

The Results? Worth It!

This entire project took just a couple of days and cost us under $200. For a fraction of the cost of new pavers, we were able to give our outdoor space a fresh, clean look, and it now feels like a whole new area.

Final Thoughts

Painting concrete is one of those DIY projects that initially feels intimidating, but with a bit of preparation and the right materials, it’s totally doable, and the payoff is enormous. If your outdoor space is looking tired but a complete renovation isn’t in the cards, give concrete paint a try. You might be surprised just how far a couple of coats can go!
