DIY Bubbling Cauldron with an Essential Oil Diffuser
Looking for an easy Halloween decoration that is spooky, inexpensive, and actually useful? This DIY bubbling cauldron turns an everyday essential oil diffuser into a misty witch’s cauldron, and it takes only a few minutes to assemble.
I love creating new decor with items that we already have sitting around the house. This essential oil cauldron is the culmination of just that. It also gets an extra bonus point for usability, making the room smell great.
DIY Bubbling Cauldron Supplies
You only need a handful of supplies for this easy Halloween DIY:

How to Make a Bubbling Cauldron
1. Place the diffuser inside the cauldron
Place the diffuser in the center of the plastic cauldron. Position the power cord so it runs neatly over the back edge.
If the diffuser sits too low, place a small, stable riser underneath it. Be sure the diffuser remains level and secure.
2. Fill the diffuser
Add water and essential oil according to the manufacturer’s directions. For a Halloween-inspired scent, try a fall blend featuring orange, clove, cinnamon, cedarwood, or frankincense.
Essential oils are completely optional—the mist creates the bubbling cauldron effect on its own.
3. Add the poly-fill
Gently pull apart small pieces of poly-fill and arrange them around the diffuser. My daughter, Audrey, came up with this idea, and it makes the mist look even more mysterious and spooky.
Keep the poly-fill loose and leave plenty of open space around the mist outlet. You want the mist to rise freely rather than blowing directly into the fiber.
4. Turn on your cauldron
Switch on the diffuser and watch the cool mist spill through the poly-fill like a bubbling witch’s potion. Dim the lights for an even spookier effect.

Tips for the Best Cauldron Effect
- Choose a diffuser with a strong, visible stream of cool mist.
- Use a cauldron only slightly larger than the diffuser so the mist stays concentrated.
- Fluff the poly-fill instead of packing it tightly.
- Hide the power cord behind nearby Halloween decorations.
- Place the cauldron against a dark background so the mist is easier to see.
- If your diffuser has colored lights, try green, purple, or orange for a magical glow.
An Easy Halloween Decoration Using What You Already Have
