Planning a Family Spring Break?
It’s never too early to start planning your family’s spring break trip. With only one week off from school, choosing the right destination can feel like a balancing act. You want to go somewhere exciting, but not so far away that you spend half the vacation getting there and recovering from the journey.
That limited time can quickly rule out destinations with multiple connections or long transfers. Still, it doesn’t mean every international adventure is off the table. A nonstop flight or a vacation where you unpack only once can make even a short break feel surprisingly spacious.
The good news? There’s a spring break destination for every kind of family. You can search for seashells on Sanibel Island, watch waterfalls thunder through Yosemite, look for sloths in Costa Rica, explore the streets of London, or simply park yourself beside a pool in Mexico and order another round of guacamole.
Whether your family is craving adventure, sunshine, history, or a little Disney magic, these family spring break ideas will help you find the perfect getaway.
1. Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Florida
Best for: Shelling, wildlife, and relaxed family beach days
Sanibel and Captiva are ideal for families looking for a relaxed spring break filled with beaches, wildlife, and outdoor activities. We visited when our kids were little and loved the islands’ easygoing pace.
Sanibel is known for shelling, biking, and the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, while Captiva offers beautiful sunsets, boat excursions, and a quieter island atmosphere.

Captiva and Sanibel Recommended Stays
South Seas Island Resort
On Captiva Island, we loved staying at South Seas when our kids were little. The sprawling waterfront resort gave us easy beach access while offering plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
South Seas has been extensively reimagined since our visit. Its current Club Captiva experience includes resort pools, beach services, restaurants, water sports, golf, and the Captiva Landing water park. Check the resort’s latest amenities, fees, and booking requirements before planning your stay.
Sundial Beach Resort and Spa
On Sanibel Island, Sundial Beach Resort & Spa is one of the area’s most highly regarded options for families. Its beachfront location, pools, restaurants, organized activities, and spacious condo-style accommodations make it worth considering.
Many Sundial accommodations include full kitchens and multiple bedrooms, which can make traveling with children much easier. Resort stays also include recreational amenities such as bikes, kayaks, paddleboards, tennis, pickleball, and beach chair-and-umbrella service.
Tip: Book lodging early, especially if you need a condo or suite with enough space for the whole family.
2. San Diego, California
Best for: Families who want beaches and attractions without choosing between the two
San Diego is one of my favorite family spring break ideas because it offers such an easy mix of beach time, outdoor adventures, and kid-friendly attractions.
You can spend the morning visiting pandas, elephants, and koalas at the San Diego Zoo and still have time to watch the sunset at the beach. Other family favorites include the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, LEGOLAND California, the museums of Balboa Park, and the calm waters of Mission Bay.
San Diego also works well for families who don’t want to schedule every minute of the trip. Some of our best travel memories happen when we leave a little room for wandering, snacking, and seeing where the day takes us.

San Diego Recommended Stays
LEGOLAND Hotel
Best for younger children. We loved its themed rooms, LEGO play areas, included breakfast, early park access, and unbeatable location directly beside LEGOLAND California.
Hotel Del Coronado
Best for a beachfront splurge. This iconic Coronado resort offers direct beach access, pools, surf lessons, family activities, and several on-site restaurants.
San Diego Mission Bay Resort
Best for a central, family-friendly base. Its waterfront pool, shallow children’s pool, bay beach, and convenient location make it especially appealing to families with smaller kids.
Tip: Temperatures can feel warm in the sun and chilly once the evening breeze arrives. Pack layers, especially for beach days and sunset outings.
3. Arenal and Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica
Best for: Wildlife, adventure, and families who want both rainforest and beach time
Costa Rica feels designed for adventurous families. Our trip combined Arenal and Manuel Antonio, giving us two completely different experiences in one vacation.
We started near Arenal Volcano, where the highlights include rainforest hikes, zip-lining, river adventures, wildlife, and natural hot springs. We then traveled to Manuel Antonio for tropical beaches, sloths, monkeys, and plenty of time to relax.
This combination worked beautifully for our family. Arenal delivered the adventure, while Manuel Antonio gave us the beach time we needed at the end of the trip.

Costa Rica Recommended Family Stays
The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal
Our recommended stay near Arenal. We loved its volcano views, natural hot-spring pools, and the on-site Club Rio Adventure Center, where families can choose from activities like river tubing, kayaking, horseback riding, and wildlife encounters.

Tulemar Resort
Our recommended stay in Manuel Antonio. Its villas and bungalows are surrounded by rainforest and wildlife, and guests have access to pools, a secluded beach, and an exclusive guided Sloth Walk.
Note: Traveling between Arenal and Manuel Antonio takes much of the day, so avoid adding a third destination to a one-week itinerary. Depending on your departure city and available flights, this trip may also require the kids to miss an extra day of school. Check flight schedules before booking so you know exactly how many usable vacation days you will have.
4. Moab, Utah
Best for: Red-rock scenery, family hikes, and national park adventures
Moab is one of our favorite bases for exploring Utah’s incredible red-rock country. We visited as a family and loved having two national parks, a beautiful state park, and plenty of outdoor adventures within easy reach.
Arches National Park is the main attraction, with more than 2,000 natural stone arches and trails for all ages and abilities. Families can see Balanced Rock, explore the Windows, walk beneath Double Arch, or tackle the longer hike to Delicate Arch.
Canyonlands National Park feels even bigger and wilder. The Island in the Sky district is the easiest section to visit from Moab, with a paved scenic drive, dramatic overlooks, and shorter walks such as the trail to Mesa Arch.
Dead Horse Point State Park is also worth adding to the itinerary. Its canyon views are spectacular, particularly around sunrise or sunset, and the park is often easier to explore when the national parks are busy.
Moab itself makes a convenient home base, with family-friendly restaurants, hotels, outfitters, and activities ranging from rafting to guided off-road tours. You can fill every day with adventure while unpacking only once.
Utah’s other national parks, including Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Capitol Reef, are also wonderful spring destinations. However, they are too far from Moab for casual day trips. Save them for a separate vacation or allow enough time for a longer Utah road trip.

Recommended Moab Stays
SpringHill Suites by Marriott Moab
Our recommended family stay. We liked the spacious suites, complimentary breakfast, and location near Arches National Park. The two pools, hot tubs, splash pad, and kids’ canyon were especially welcome after a day of hiking.
Hoodoo Moab, Curio Collection by Hilton
A more luxurious option in downtown Moab. Although we haven’t personally stayed here, it offers stylish rooms and family-sized suites, a heated outdoor pool, an on-site restaurant, and a full-service spa, all about 10 minutes from Arches National Park.
Note: Spring is one of Moab’s busiest seasons. Arrive at the parks early, carry plenty of water, and check current entrance procedures, parking conditions, and reservation requirements before your trip. Temperatures can shift quickly, so dress in layers and prepare for cold mornings.
5. Maui, Hawaii
Best for: A laid-back spring break filled with beaches, snorkeling, and family time
We have traveled to Maui for spring break four times, which says just about everything you need to know about how much our family loves it. It is our favorite Hawaiian island when we want a slower vacation centered around beaches, snorkeling, and time together.
Maui is also a practical spring break option for many West Coast families. Nonstop flights from several major West Coast cities take roughly five to six hours, making Hawaii surprisingly manageable for a one-week vacation. The journey can be much longer from the East Coast, especially with a connection, so families should compare total travel time before booking.
Maui makes it easy to balance adventure with relaxation. You can visit Haleakalā, take a surf lesson, or explore the island one day, then spend the next doing little more than moving between the beach and pool.

Maui Recommended Stays
Napili Kai Beach Resort
Our favorite place to stay on Maui. Its relaxed atmosphere, location on Napili Bay, four pools, and studios and suites with kitchens or kitchenettes make it especially convenient for families. It also currently offers complimentary parking, with no resort fee.
Aston Kāʻanapali Shores
A good choice for families who want condo-style accommodations. Many units include full kitchens, and the resort has two pools, a children’s wading area, barbecue grills, an on-site restaurant, and direct beach access.
Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa
Best for families looking for a full-service resort experience. Its pool complex includes waterfalls, a waterslide, a rope bridge, and an interactive children’s area, while the Kāʻanapali location provides easy access to the beach and nearby activities.
6. Disneyland and Southern California
Best for: Disney fans and families looking for a shorter theme-park vacation
For families who want Disney magic without tackling the enormous size of Walt Disney World, Disneyland can be a great spring break choice. Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure sit directly across from each other, making it easy to move between the two parks.
The compact layout is especially helpful for families with younger children. Less transportation to coordinate, and returning to a nearby hotel for naps or pool time can be relatively simple.
Another advantage is that Disneyland can become part of a larger Southern California vacation. Add a beach day in Orange County, visit Knott’s Berry Farm, explore Los Angeles, visit Universal Studios Hollywood, or combine Disneyland with a few days in San Diego.

Spring break tip: Staying within walking distance makes it much easier to return to the hotel for a swim, nap, or midday break before heading back to the parks.
7. Riviera Maya, Mexico
Best for: Families looking for sunshine, beautiful beaches, and an easy all-inclusive getaway
Cancún and Playa del Carmen make spring break simple: warm weather, gorgeous beaches, and plenty of family-friendly resorts. Cancún is a great choice if you want a classic beachfront resort vacation, while Playa del Carmen offers a more relaxed atmosphere and convenient access to many of the Riviera Maya’s best attractions.
Beyond the beach, families can snorkel, swim in cenotes, explore Mayan ruins, or visit one of the area’s adventure parks. Our family especially loved Hotel Xcaret México. The resort’s All-Fun Inclusive program includes access and transportation to the Xcaret parks and activities, which made planning our days incredibly easy and kept everyone entertained.
Riviera Maya Recommended Stays
Hotel Xcaret México
Our family loved Hotel Xcaret México. It is definitely a splurge, but meals, transportation, and unlimited access to the Xcaret parks and activities are included, making it easy to plan an unforgettable family vacation.
Paradisus Playa del Carmen
A highly rated, family-friendly all-inclusive that is often more affordable than Hotel Xcaret. Although we haven’t stayed here ourselves, several friends and family members have thoroughly enjoyed their vacations there. Paradisus offers spacious suites, a water park, kids’ activities, and multiple pools, making it a strong option for families, especially those with younger children.
8. Yosemite National Park, California
Best for: Families who want dramatic scenery and a national park adventure
Yosemite is magnificent in spring. Waterfalls begin roaring back to life, crowds can be lighter than during summer, and the valley looks especially beautiful against snow-covered peaks.
We visited Yosemite during spring break and loved experiencing the park during this quieter season. Families can see Yosemite Falls, walk to Lower Yosemite Fall, explore Yosemite Valley, and enjoy scenic viewpoints without tackling strenuous hikes.

This is where we stayed, a comfortable, family-friendly base near Yosemite’s South Entrance. The lodge offers rooms and cottages, indoor and outdoor pools, on-site dining, and seasonal family activities, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring the park.
The Ahwahnee
Yosemite’s iconic luxury hotel, located in the heart of the valley with views of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and the surrounding cliffs. We haven’t stayed here yet, but it is definitely on our wish list.
9. Washington DC
Best for: Families who want history, museums, and an educational trip that is still fun
Washington, D.C., is one of those rare destinations that can entertain children while bringing their history lessons to life. Many of the city’s museums and attractions are free, which can also help balance the cost of accommodations.
Spring is a beautiful time to visit, particularly if your trip overlaps with cherry blossom season.

A dependable family option with spacious two-room suites, complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast, an indoor pool, and easy access to Georgetown and Dupont Circle.
10. London, England
Best for: Families ready for an international city adventure
London may be farther away, but it can still work surprisingly well for a one-week spring break—especially if you can book a nonstop overnight flight. We have visited London twice with our kids and found it packed with fascinating history, family-friendly attractions, and activities that appeal to different ages.
London’s excellent public transportation makes it easy to explore without renting a car. A week gives families enough time to see the major sights, enjoy a West End show, and leave room for wandering through the city’s parks, markets, and historic neighborhoods.

Leonardo Royal Hotel London St Paul’s
We loved its central location near St Paul’s Cathedral and several Underground stations. Its spacious rooms and convenient location make it a comfortable base for exploring London as a family.
The Cumberland
A convenient family option at Marble Arch, directly across from Hyde Park and close to Oxford Street. Its family rooms have two double beds, making it especially practical when traveling with kids.
Spring break tip: Try not to schedule too much on your first day. Jet lag is real—especially with kids—and a relaxed walk or sightseeing bus tour is an easy way to begin the trip.
11. A Caribbean Cruise
Best for: Families who want an easy vacation with something for everyone
A Caribbean cruise is an excellent spring break option because the weather is generally warm, unpacking happens only once, and meals and entertainment are built into the trip. Families can visit several islands while still enjoying plenty of downtime aboard the ship.
We took a Holland America Caribbean cruise some time ago and had a wonderful experience. The warm weather and mix of relaxing sea days and island stops made it an easy and memorable family vacation.

Holland America Line Caribbean Cruise
A good choice for families who appreciate a more relaxed onboard atmosphere, comfortable ships, and interesting ports. We took a Caribbean cruise with Holland America a few years back, and it’s a Spring Break the kids still talk about today. It is considered more relaxed and quiet than other cruise lines, but we found it perfect for our family.
Disney Cruise Line Caribbean Cruise
A magical family option with excellent children’s clubs, Disney entertainment, character experiences, and activities for adults. This is a bit more of a splurge, but if you are a Disney fan, it is well worth it.
12. New York City, New York
Best for: Families who love big-city energy, iconic attractions, museums, and theater
New York City packs an incredible amount into a one-week spring break. Families can explore world-class museums, see a Broadway show, wander through Central Park, and visit landmarks the kids have seen in movies and books.
The city can feel overwhelming, so resist the temptation to schedule every minute. Choose one or two main activities each day, explore neighborhoods on foot, and leave time for pizza stops, bakeries, and unexpected discoveries.

A hotel our family stayed at and really enjoyed. Its all-suite layout gives families valuable extra space, while the Lower Manhattan location is convenient for Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center, and the 9/11 Memorial.
The Plaza Hotel
The ultimate New York City splurge and the famous hotel from Home Alone 2. We haven’t stayed here, but its Central Park location, spacious family rooms, Eloise experiences, and unmistakable New York glamour make it a memorable bucket-list option.
Spring break tip: Group attractions by neighborhood instead of crisscrossing Manhattan. The city blocks and subway rides add up quickly, especially with tired kids.
Choosing the Best Family Spring Break Destination
The perfect spring break trip looks different for every family. Some years call for adventure, while others call for a beach chair and no schedule at all. Consider your children’s ages, flight time from your home airport, your budget, and how much everyone realistically wants to do.
Most importantly, choose a destination that allows your family to enjoy the week instead of racing through it. Our kids may not remember every museum, hike, or hotel room, but they remember the adventures, the funny mishaps, and the time we spent together, and those are the best spring break souvenirs.
